Sex and clonality in the little fire ant.

Reproduction systems are controlling the creation of new genetic variants as well as how natural selection can operate on these variants. Therefore, they had historically been one of the main foci of evolutionary biology studies. The little fire ant, Wasmannia auropunctata, has been found to display an extraordinary reproduction system, in which both males and female queens are produced clonall...

Ornament evolution in dragon lizards: multiple gains and widespread losses reveal a complex history of evolutionary change.

The expression in females of ornaments thought to be the target of sexual selection in males is a long-standing puzzle. Two main hypotheses are proposed to account for the existence of conspicuous ornaments in both sexes (mutual ornamentation): genetic correlation between the sexes and sexual selection on females as well as males. We examined the pattern of ornament gains and losses in 240 spec...

Some biochemical compounds in male and female plants of Ephedra intermedia Schrenket.

Ephedra intermedia is a dioecious plant of the Ephedraceae family whose male and female plants are quite similar in shape, but their biochemical differences are not known. The subject was the TLC and GC-MS study of fatty acids, phenols, essential oils, and alkaloids in male and female shoots of E. intermedia. Male and female shoots were collected from Markazi province in Iran, in spring. Alcoho...

Influential feeding dynamics of sharks and mathematical formulas to estimate the power of biting by morphological data

The mouths of some bony and cartilaginous fishes are located in the anterior part of theirbodies, with a slight variation in sharks, which have theirs located in the abdominal part. Thisvariation is evolutionary over time. The force exerted by the jaws of sharks in order todismember their prey can be examined from two origins: .The determined force exerted by teethand muscles and the force as a...

A cross-cultural analysis of the behavior of women and men: implications for the origins of sex differences.

This article evaluates theories of the origins of sex differences in human behavior. It reviews the cross-cultural evidence on the behavior of women and men in nonindustrial societies, especially the activities that contribute to the sex-typed division of labor and patriarchy. To explain the cross-cultural findings, the authors consider social constructionism, evolutionary psychology, and their...
